Golden Guernsey Goats

May2014

The little Channel island of Guernsey has given the world the Guernsey cow as well as the Golden Guernsey goat.  It really is golden, with silky hair, often long and wavy and is the latest friendly small pet for our little farmyard.  The gold colour can vary from a pale blonde gold to a deep bronze.  The breed standards do not allow Swiss marking or neck tassels.

Its milk yield is fairly small, making it unsuitable as a commercial breed, but quite satisfactory as a family milk provider.  It has a considerable advantage over some breeds in its hardiness and high roughage diet preference.  Its distribution is limited, being confined to Guernsey and mainland Britain and was first introduced to mainland Britain in 1965.
